Sony Pictures to make Steve Jobs biography into a movie – The Next Web

leave a comment »

Well you know it had to happen at some point and it looks like it will be sooner rather than later now. Sony Pictures is in the process of making a ‘hefty’ deal for the feature rights to the upcoming biography of Steve Jobs by Walter Isaacson, reports Mike Fleming of Deadline.

The reports says that the deal is set for $1M against $3M with Mark Gordon tapped to produce for MG360. Gordon is represented by ICM, who also reps Isaacson.

Sony has a recent tech biopic, The Social Network, under its belt which went home with 3 Oscars this year.

The biography was recently pushed up in its timetable to be released later this month on October 24th, after Jobs passed away this week. It clocks in at 448 pages and Isaacson, who has authored biographies of Henry Kissinger, Benjamin Franklin and Albert Einstein, was given unprecedented access to Jobs for the book. It contains content based on 40 interviews and over 100 conversations with friends, family and competitors.

Jobs has previously been played by Noah Wylie in the TV movie Pirates of Silicon Valley. Jobs liked his portrayal so much that he invited him to reprise his role at Macworld New York in 1999.

Google predicts the Internet could create 365,000 new UK jobs by 2015

Economists based in Google have predicted that an Internet boom in the UK could open as many as 365,000 jobs within the next five years, with the Internet accounting for a fifth of the regions GDP growth, The Telegraph reports.

Google’s European Vice-President and chief of search operations Philipp Schindler believes that despite European businesses fighting to remain afloat during a period of economic uncertainty, Internet-based or Internet-related companies that use the web successfully were still growing strongly.

“A study by McKinsey has shown that in France and in a mature economy like the UK, the internet is responsible for a fifth of GDP growth. In the UK, given the rate of job creation that economists associate with a rise in GDP, this translates into an expectation of hundreds of thousands of new jobs thanks to the internet,” he said.

“And I think that is on the conservative side. That is what could be achieved by putting a focus on this sector. That feels to me like a sizeable number.”

Schindler is in the UK to help drive Germany’s mid-sized sector, helping to drive the amount of goods exported by businesses in the region. He noted that for every pound that is imported, the UK exports “close to £3 in e-commerce goods and services”. He adds that the “UK is already doing relatively well in that sector but the ratio could be significantly higher”.

Apple’s Steve Jobs has resigned as CEO of the company, reports the company. Apple’s COO Tim Cook has been named as a replacement and Jobs has been named Chairman of the company’s Board of Directors.

In a publicly released letter, Jobs says that he can no longer meet his duties and expectations as CEO of the company and that he has resigned as the CEO of Apple. In the letter, he also recommended Apple’s COO Tim Cook as a successor, which does not come as a surprise to those of us who have been following the company.

As the company’s interim CEO in recent  months as Jobs has been absent due to health concerns, Cook has been the clear choice to those outside Apple for some time now, and apparently that choice had been made inside Apple as well as Jobs says that this is according to the company’s succession plan.

“Steve’s extraordinary vision and leadership saved Apple and guided it to its position as the world’s most innovative and valuable technology company,” said Art Levinson, Chairman of Genentech, on behalf of Apple’s Board. “Steve has made countless contributions to Apple’s success, and he has attracted and inspired Apple’s immensely creative employees and world class executive team. In his new role as Chairman of the Board, Steve will continue to serve Apple with his unique insights, creativity and inspiration.”

“The Board has complete confidence that Tim is the right person to be our next CEO,” added Levinson. “Tim’s 13 years of service to Apple have been marked by outstanding performance, and he has demonstrated remarkable talent and sound judgment in everything he does.”

Steve Jobs has been one of the most intense and charismatic executives of any company in recent years and his leadership has propelled Apple to new heights. This is a dramatic announcement and we will have continuing news on the ramifications of Jobs’ move to Chairman and the replacement of his role at CEO by Tim Cook.
